It was as if the two parties had switched bodies Tuesday night:

President Trump, after a year-plus of demonizing Mexicans and Muslims — and, more recently, “shithole countries” in general — decided that it was time to actually celebrate America’s diversity. Thus his guests included male and female (both white) business owners, as well as their African-American employee, a Latino ICE agent and a North Korean defector triumphantly showing his crutches after an operation replaced his amputated limbs. Cynical overture, perhaps, but it worked well theatrically.
