Two young men follow a 16-year-old to rob her of a hoverboard. When she resists, one shoots and wounds her. Separately, four young men attempt to rob a teen of his hoverboard by physically attacking him. The hoverboard is a new $400 toy, basically a mechanized skateboard.

The idea of someone willing to kill to acquire one boggles the mind. It’s inconceivable that anyone would risk spending decades behind bars to acquire it. But six young men in my experience as a prosecutor did just that.

Can we expect to reduce our jail and prison population if we don’t end this violent and self-destructive behavior?
