IN DECEMBER 2015, the movie "Concussion" was set for a Christmas Day release in nearly 3,000 theaters across America. The film told the story of the NFL's attempts to discredit research tying brain damage to football, and Bob Costas wanted to address it on national television.

Over the previous decade, Costas had become the face of football on NBC, hosting one of TV's most-watched programs, "Sunday Night Football." As part of every broadcast, Costas would take two minutes at halftime to speak directly to the program's 18 million viewers about the NFL issues of the day. Mostly, his commentaries were celebrations of the sport -- Brady vs. Manning, a tribute to Lambeau Field -- but, occasionally, he addressed subjects like gun control or the controversial name of the Washington, D.C., football team.

Bob Costas Apologizes To Cubs’ Pedro Strop For ‘Harsh’ Comments

By Des Bieler, Jun. 28, 2015, Washington Post

By his own admission, Bob Costas’s comments about the Cubs’ Pedro Strop during a recent game were excessively “harsh,” so he apologized to the relief pitcher. For his part, Strop didn’t seem to hold any grudge, telling reporters Sunday, “We all make mistakes.”

Costas was calling Friday’s Cubs-Cardinals game for MLB Network, and he reacted to Strop pointing skyward after he was pulled from the mound. The relief pitcher had faced just four batters and given up a home run, a hit batsman and a walk.

After Strop made his gesture, Costas said, “We can only ask, or wonder, that he is asking some departed relative for forgiveness for this atrocious performance.” Here is video of the sequence:

Bob Costas: Caitlyn Jenner Receiving Arthur Ashe Award A ‘Crass Exploitation Play'

By CBS Connecticut, Jun. 9, 2015

BRISTOL, Conn. (CBS Connecticut/AP) — Legendary sports broadcaster Bob Costas is not a fan of Caitlyn Jenner receiving the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYS next month.

Speaking to “The Dan Patrick Show” on Monday, Costas called it a “crass exploitation play.”

“It strikes me that awarding the Arthur Ashe Award to Caitlyn Jenner is just a crass exploitation play – it’s a tabloid play,” Costas said. “In the broad world of sports, I’m pretty sure they could’ve found someone – and this is not anything against Caitlyn Jenner – who was much closer actively involved in sports, who would’ve been deserving of what that award represents. That’s not to say it doesn’t take some measure of person courage to do what Caitlyn Jenner has done.”

ESPN has received some criticism from the online world about giving the former Olympian the award for coming out as a transgender woman. Some critics championed Lauren Hill, the Mount St. Joseph basketball player who died from brain cancer at the age of 19.
