Oscars: Adam McKay Warns Against "Weirdo Billionaires" In Acceptance Speech

By THR Staff, Feb 28, 2016 Hollywood Reporter

Director and screenwriter Adam McKay took the opportunity to warn voters of candidates who take money from questionable places, including "weirdo billionaires," during his acceptance speech.

The Big Short, which was written by McKay and Charles Randolph and based on Michael Lewis' best-seller of the same name, won best adapted screenplay at the 88th annual Academy Awards. Onstage, McKay thanked "Paramount for taking a risk on a movie that’s about financial esoterica and believing in it."

North Dakota Oil Bust Shatters, Shifts Dreams Of Transplants

By Ted Gregory, Feb 28, 2016 MSN

CHICAGO — When the oil boom was churning in remote expanses of Montana and North Dakota, Andy Turco left college in Illinois to take a chance on finding backbreaking, dangerous and high-paying work on the Great Plains.

He landed in Williston, N.D., where he lived in a car in a Wal-Mart parking lot for weeks, eventually getting hired as an oil roughneck. Turco worked 90 hours a week, earning nearly six figures, and said it was the best thing he’d done in his life.

“I’m finally living an adult lifestyle,” Turco, then 24, said in March 2013, “instead of a teenage dropout lifestyle.”

But the floor dropped out from under Turco in the middle of 2014, when an oil glut led to a plunge in gas prices that delighted drivers but indirectly put an estimated 250,000 global oil and gas employees out of work, including Turco. He returned home to the Midwest and self-destructed.

Warren Buffett Says Climate Change No Risk To Berkshire Hathaway

By Stephen Foley, Feb 27, 2016 Financial Times

Warren Buffett has dismissed the possibility that climate change could prove a big risk to Berkshire Hathaway’s insurance business, in a combative annual letter to shareholders.

In the letter, released on Saturday, Mr Buffett took on a dissident shareholder who plans to raise global warming at Berkshire’s annual meeting next month, as well as critics of the company’s Clayton Homes mobile homes subsidiary and politicians who paint a gloomy picture of the US economy.

Its passage on climate change sets the stage for a showdown at the annual meeting over whether Berkshire should file a formal report on the risks posed to its business. A proposal to that effect has been filed by the Nebraska Peace Foundation, which owns a single Berkshire share.

Buffett Fires Lucky-To-Be-American Letter At Gloomy Politicians

By Noah Buhayar, Feb 28, 2016 Boomberg

Warren Buffett reaches a broad audience with his annual letters to Berkshire Hathaway Inc. shareholders -- and, on Saturday, he reached right out to U.S. voters.

In sweeping passages, he rejected the economic pessimism dominating the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign as “dead wrong” and made a case for a bright future. A supporter of Democrat Hillary Clinton, the 85-year-old Berkshire chief executive officer didn’t name the candidates espousing a dark outlook. But his message put him at odds with most of the Republican field and Clinton’s primary challenger, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

Jeb Bush’s Ambitions Paid Dividends For GOP Admaker Over The Years

By Matea Gold, Feb 28, 2016 Washington Post

The sudden end to Jeb Bush’s presidential campaign this month appeared to bring another chapter to a close: his long and fruitful partnership with Republican admaker Mike Murphy, the brash strategist who has been at his side for nearly two decades.

Since 1998, when Murphy helped Bush remake his image and win the Florida governor’s office after an earlier failed bid, the strategist’s firms have received nearly $36 million from Bush’s campaigns, allied political committees and educational foundation, according to campaign finance and tax records compiled by The Washington Post. While the vast majority of the money went to purchase advertising, Murphy got a significant cut as the media consultant.

In this year’s presidential contest, the pugnacious strategist helmed the big-money super PAC that Bush and his allies believed would give him a key edge in the race. By the time the former governor bowed out, Right to Rise USA had raced through more than $101 million of the nearly $119 million it had amassed, to little effect.

Stacey Dash Bit Bombed

By Stacey Dash, Feb 28, 2016 Patheos

You might be watching the Oscars and wondering why someone named Stacey Dash just walked across the stage. (Why was that funny anyway?)

Well, I’m Stacey – with an “e” – and it’s nice to meet you. I was born in the South Bronx, became an actress in Hollywood where I starred in the 1995 movie Clueless.

Since then, you won’t believe what happened. (Actually you can read the full story in my upcoming book There Goes My Social Life: From Clueless to Conservative.) Even though I voted for Obama during 2008 – even had a bumper sticker! – I didn’t make the same mistake twice. In 2012, I voted for Mitt Romney – and everyone freaked the hell out about it.

Ohio Pastor Shot & Killed During Sunday Service

By CBS News, Feb 28, 2016

DAYTON, Ohio (KDKA/AP) – An Ohio pastor with deep roots in the Dayton community was shot and killed at his church, and police have taken his brother into custody for the slaying.

Dayton police say 70-year-old William B. Schooler was shot around 12:30 p.m. Sunday while in his office at St. Peter’s Missionary Baptist Church.

According to CBS affiliate WHIO, witnesses said the shooting happened at the pulpit while the choir was singing. However, police have reported that Schooler was not in the pulpit when he was attacked.

MUST LISTEN: Stephen Miller Makes Case Against Marco Rubio In Epic Rant

By Katie McHugh, Feb 27, 2016 Breitbart

“First of all, let’s remember the warning of Rush Limbaugh, who said if Rubio is president, within 12 to 18 months, the entirely of the donor class agenda will be implemented,” Miller said.

He described that agenda in detail as:

Mass immigration, open borders, amnesty, TPP [Trans-Pacific Trade partnership] and even more globalist trade deals, and the destruction of U.S. sovereignty.

Understand, everyone listening today: There is a point of no return. It is not far away. It is right in front of you. And if you cross it, there is no going back.

Chris Rock Was Once A 'Risky' Choice As Oscars Host, But Everybody's Listening Now

By Mary McNamara, Feb 28, 2016 LA Times

Eleven years ago, the film academy considered itself quite daring when it asked Chris Rock to host the Oscars.

The first black man to preside solo over the festivities, Rock would, it was hoped, bring a younger, hipper, more urban audience to the telecast, perhaps tighten up its sagging ratings, make it seem a bit less calcified.

The Republican Party’s Implosion Over Donald Trump’s Candidacy Has Arrived

By Philip Rucker, Feb 28 2016 Washington Post

MADISON, Ala. — The implosion over Donald Trump’s candidacy that Republicans had hoped to avoid arrived so virulently this weekend that many party leaders vowed never to back the billionaire and openly questioned whether the GOP could come together this election year.

At a moment when Republicans had hoped to begin taking on Hillary Clinton — who is seemingly on her way to wrapping up the Democratic nomination — the GOP has instead become consumed by a crisis over its identity and core values that is almost certain to last through the July party convention, if not the rest of the year.

Displaced Disney Workers: Shame on You Marco Rubio; We Stand With Trump

By Julia Hahn, Feb 28, 2016 Breitbart

MADISON, Alabama — At Donald Trump’s Sunday rally at Madison City Stadium, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)79%
’s own constituents—two displaced Disney workers—publicly denounced Rubio for prioritizing the interests of his big business donors over the interests of his own constituents. The two endorsed GOP frontrunner Donald Trump for President.

Dena Moore and Leo Perrero were two Disney workers who were informed that they were going to be laid off during the holiday season of 2014. They—along with scores of their colleagues—were told that before they were let go, they’d be forced to train their low-skilled foreign replacements brought in on H-1B visas. Earlier this week, Perrero testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee about the humiliation he was forced to endure by training his foreign replacement. While Donald Trump has called on Disney to hire back all of these workers and has pledged to end H-1B job theft as President, Sen. Marco Rubio has pushed to expand the controversial H-1B program—he has introduced two bills that would dramatically boost the issuances of H-1Bs. As recently as last year, Rubio introduced a bill—endorsed by Disney’s CEO Bob Iger via his immigration lobbying firm—that would triple the issuances of H-1Bs. Disney is one of Sen. Rubio’s top financial backers—having donated more that $2 million according to Open Secrets.

Someone Added A ‘Gay Voice’ To Donald Trump And It’s Fabulous (VIDEO)

By Peter Serafinowicz, Feb 26, 2016 Bi Partisan Peport

Donald’s South Carolina victory speech was just tweaked by someone on YouTube. The words are exactly as Trump said them, but the voice is different.

Towleroad reports:

Donald Trump has become known for his distinct oratory style (among other things) while campaigning for president this year. But what if Trump spoke with what is stereotypically considered to be the “gay voice”? What would that sound like? Thanks to YouTuber Peter Serafinowicz, you no longer have to wonder. He recently took Trump’s victory speech in South Carolina and dubbed Trump with a lispy and colorful ‘gay voice’, turning Donald J. Trump into Donald Gay Trump.

New Penn Dean Explains Why Gun Law Drove Him From Texas

By Inga Saffron, Feb 28, 2016 Philly.com

All things being equal, Frederick Steiner probably would have stayed in Austin as dean of the University of Texas' prestigious architecture program. But last week, he announced he was leaving to take the identical job at the University of Pennsylvania's somewhat less-stellar design school.

The deciding factor? Steiner didn't want to police a new Texas law allowing licensed gun owners to bring concealed weapons to class.

Although gun-rights advocates have promised that the looser rules will keep college campuses safe from mass shooters, Steiner concluded that he would be better off in Philadelphia, where - let's be honest - the homicide rate is nothing to brag about. So after 15 years of working to make the Texas architecture school an academic powerhouse, he is heading to Penn, starting July 1.

In Major Blow To Ted Cruz, Sen. Jeff Sessions Of Alabama Endorses Donald Trump For GOP Nomination

By Jose A. DelReal, Feb 28, 2016 Washington Post

MADISON, Ala. — Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), whose hard-line conservative stances on immigration and trade have made him a favorite of the party’s base, endorsed Donald Trump's White House bid during a joint appearance here in his home state Sunday.

"Politicians have promised for 30 years to fix illegal immigration. Have they done it? Donald Trump will do it," Sessions said at the Madison City Schools Stadium, where thousands gathered to hear Trump speak. “I’ve told Donald Trump this isn’t a campaign, this is a movement.”

Jeff Session Endorses Donald Trump

By Ian Schwartz, Feb 28, 2016 Real Clear Politcs

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Alabama) endorsed Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Huntsville Sunday evening. Sessions promised a "Gang of Eight" type of immigration reform bill would not be passed in a Donald Trump presidency.

"There is an opportunity this year, Tuesday, and we have the opportunity -- we have an opportunity Tuesday. It may be the last opportunity we have for the people's voice to be heard. You have asked for 30 years, and politicians have promised for 30 years to fix illegal immigration," Sessions said.

"The American people have known for years these trade agreements have not been working for them," Sessions stumped. "We now have and will soon have a vote on the Transpacific Partnership TPP), Obamatrade, and it will damage America. It will create a commission that undermines our sovereignty, and it should not pass. Donald Trump when he gets elected president will see it does not pass."

Hillary Clinton Wins South Carolina As Bernie Sanders Flops With Black voters

By Liz Goodwin, Feb 27, 2016 Yahoo

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Hillary Clinton trounced her rival Bernie Sanders in South Carolina Saturday, her second decisive win in a week as she heads into Super Tuesday.

“Tomorrow, this campaign goes national,” Clinton said to a fired-up crowd at the volleyball court in the University of South Carolina.

Her speech was largely aimed at GOP frontrunner Donald Trump, as if she were already the nominee making a general election pitch. “We don’t need to make America great again. America never stopped being great,” she said. “Instead of building walls, we need to be tearing down barriers.”

She quoted Scripture and asked for more “love and kindness,” setting up a sharp contrast to Trump.

Bombshell: Insider Leaks Koch Bros, Rubio Plan to Stop Trump

By Kit Daniels, Feb 28, 2016 InfoWars

The Koch Bros. met with GOP millionaires and billionaires Thursday night to pool together over $75 million to stop Trump and are going to use Mitt Romney as ‘Plan B’ if Rubio fails to gain traction on Super Tuesday, according to moles who were inside the meeting.
“$75 million to stop Trump and $25 million to Marco Rubio, but they gave Rubio a condition: he’s got to win the Florida primary or he’s out and Mitt Romney’s in,” Stone revealed. “That’s the plan.”
