Voters Think Pathway to Citizenship Will Lead to More Illegal Immigration
Voters continue to believe that securing the border is more important than legalizing the status of undocumented workers already here and think plans to offer legal status to such individuals will just encourage more illegal immigration.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 78% of Likely U.S. Voters consider illegal immigration at least a somewhat serious problem in America today. Just 21% don’t think it’s a serious problem. This includes 47% who believe illegal immigration is a Very Serious problem and six percent (6%) who say it’s Not At All Serious. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
Sixty-one percent (61%) think gaining control of the border is more important than legalizing the status of undocumented workers already living in the United States. That’s up just one point from August, but it’s the highest level of support in three years. Thirty-three percent (33%) believe it’s more important to legalize those already living here, the lowest finding in two years.
In fact, 54% believe providing a pathway to citizenship for those currently in the country illegally will just encourage more illegal immigration. Just 29% disagree, but 17% are not sure.
Last August, 56% said the policies and practices of the federal government encourage people to enter the United States illegally, the highest level of cynicism since June 2012. Nearly half of voters want Congress to stop President Obama’s new plan to protect up to five million illegal immigrants from deportation.

The survey of 800 Likely Voters was conducted on January 9-10, 2015 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.
