Vitter: WH 'Bending Over Backwards To Give OCare To Illegal immigrants'
Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) is accusing the Obama administration of “turning a blind eye” to hundreds of thousands of people who didn’t prove their citizenship when signing up for the Affordable Care Act.
“The Obama Administration is bending over backwards to give Obamacare to illegal immigrants — but won’t protect hard working American citizens who are losing their health care coverage,” Vitter said in a release Monday.
The Louisiana Republican sent a letter to the head of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) demanding to know how the agency would handle the thousands of people who have ignored requests to verify their immigration status.
About 115,000 people who signed up for ObamaCare have yet to offer proof of their citizenship, Marilyn Tavenner, head of the CMS, said last week. That figure is down from about 310,000 people earlier this summer.
The federal government has said it will cut off those individuals’ coverage on Sept. 30, though they can sign up again during a 60-day special enrollment period after that date. The deadline had initially been Sept. 5.
Vitter said the government’s approach to the problem has been too lax — and slow.
“The Obama administration has been granting deadline extensions, making excuses, and turning a blind eye to falsified documents by illegal immigrants. Enough is enough, and they need to provide answers to why they think illegal immigrants should be eligible for Obamacare,” Vitter wrote in a statement.
In the letter to Tavenner, Vitter also asked if the CMS will finish its review before the upcoming enrollment period on Nov. 15, and if there would be consequences for “falsifying documents to a government agency.”
The federal government is also working to verify income levels for about 300,000 people who have signed up for ObamaCare, which Vitter also condemned as an administration failure.
