An anguished father, whose
son was murdered by shooting suspect Elliot Rodger, pointed at the NRA.
Richard Martinez said: “Why did Chris die? Chris died because of craven,
irresponsible politicians and the NRA. They talk about gun rights. What about
Chris’s right to live? When will this insanity stop? When will enough people
say, ‘Stop this madness, we don’t have to live like this.' Too many have died. We
should say to ourselves: ‘Not one more.'”
This is a man, of course, in
deep pain and the desire to blame something or someone is understandable. But of the six murder victims, three were
stabbed to death. Several of the injured were run over with Rodger’s car. This prompted the following by Facebook
friend Stephen Sacks:
“We need to put pressure on
the National Kitchenware Dealers Association and also the national Car Dealers
Association. Three killed by knives. Two attempted murders by BMW. How is it
possible that people can buy steak knives and Toyotas without a waiting
period?”
It appears that Rogers had
been in touch with mental health professionals, and the police had recently
conducted a welfare check on him at the request of his family. He persuaded the police that he was
fine. By all means, mental health-care
experts should advise us on warning signs.
But while they play Sigmund
Freud, may we protect ourselves?
There are nearly 40 states
that allow people -- on a “shall issue” basis -- to carry a concealed
weapon. California is not one of
them. Indeed, California has some of the
most stringent “gun control” laws in the country, including the closure of the
so-called “gun-show loophole.” All transactions
require a background check -- even a private sale between two police
officers. For environmental reasons,
California lawmakers recently banned the use of lead bullets for hunting, the
first such ban in the nation. And a new
law requires “traceable micro-stamping” for all new semi-automatic handguns.
Still the NRA gets blamed -- never the gun-free zones, never the inability of citizens to protect themselves, never the shooter.
