 A fare war between Uber and Lyft has led to billions of dollars in losses for both ride-hailing companies as they fight for passengers and drivers.

 But in one way it has been good for investors who snatched up the newly public companies' stock: The losses have scared off the competition, giving the leaders a duopoly in almost every American city.

LAX Becomes Largest U.S. Airport To Allow Uber, Lyft Pickups

Los Angeles officials voted Thursday to allow ride services such as Uber and Lyft to pick up passengers at LAX, the largest U.S. city to grant full airport access to the rapidly growing app-based companies.

The move could significantly alter the way thousands of Southern Californians and tourists navigate the nation's third-busiest airport, long criticized for traffic congestion and lack of a direct connection to the region's rail system. If the companies can quickly comply with the airport's rules, Lyft and Uber services — some offering lower fares than taxis — could be available by September, officials said.

Uber Buying Microsoft’s Bing Maps To Lessen Reliance On Google Maps

Uber is one step closer to taking over the world after buying Microsoft Bing mapping assets.

The firm is looking to lessen its reliance on Google Maps and the acquisition come just days after Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced to staff in an email the company will be making tough decisions.

Around 100 of the Microsoft’s Bing Maps engineers will be moved to Uber after they were bought for an undisclosed sum.

A data centre, cameras and image-analysing software were also part of the deal.

An Uber spokesperson said: ‘We’re excited about the talent and technology this acquisition brings.

Uber Changes Policy To Prohibit Guns In Cars

Ride-hailing company Uber has changed its policy to prohibit drivers and passengers from carrying guns in cars for trips arranged using its digital service.

Uber's updated legal page on its website includes a policy prohibiting "firearms of any kind in a vehicle" operated by an Uber driver, with violators potentially losing access to the app.

"We have adopted a no-firearms policy to ensure that both riders and drivers feel safe and comfortable on the platform," Uber's Matt McKenna said in a statement to the New Republic, which first reported the change in policy.

"We made this policy change after assessing existing policies and carefully reviewing recent feedback from both riders and driver-partners," McKenna added.

California Labor Commission Rules Uber Driver Is Employee, Not An Independent Contractor

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – In what could be a game-changing decision, the California Labor Commission has ruled that an Uber driver should be classified as an employee, and not an independent contractor.

The ruling actually came down in March and came to light this week after Uber filed an appeal. The California Labor Commission ruled that Barbara Ann Berwick, a former Uber driver in San Francisco, be reimbursed $4,152.50 for expenses and other costs while she was a driver.

Berwick filed an initial claim with the Labor Commissioner’s office on September 16, 2014. The complaint alleged that she was owed wages earned and unpaid from July 25, 2014 to September 16, 2014, along with the reimbursement of expenses, liquidated damages and waiting time penalties.

A hearing was held in March in San Francisco and the Labor Commission ruled that Berwick was indeed an employee of Uber, and the company must reimburse her.
