SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California’s governor vowed on Monday to continue expanding taxpayer funded health benefits to adults living in the country illegally next year, ensuring the volatile issue will get top billing in the 2020 presidential election as Democrats vying for the nomination woo voters in the country’s most populous state.

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a $214.8 billion operating budget last week that includes spending to make low-income adults 25 and younger living in the country illegally eligible for the state’s Medicaid program. California is the first state to do this, with an expected cost of $98 million to cover about 90,000 people

President Donald Trump launched his re-election campaign on Tuesday evening in Orlando, Florida, telling a standing-room-only crowd at the Amway Center he had been tougher on Russia than any president — including his predecessor.

Trump attacked the Democrats’ accusations of “Russia collusion,” calling it an effort by the outgoing administration to “subvert our democracy.” It was a familiar argument — but Trump added a new twist, going after Obama’s record and boasting of his willingness to confront Russia:

In his first major rally since Special Counsel Robert Mueller cleared him of any collusion with Russia, President Trump took the stage before a boisterous full house at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Thursday night -- and proceeded to tear into Democrats and the FBI as unintelligent "frauds" who tried desperately to undermine the results of the 2016 election.

"The Democrats have to now decide whether they will continue defrauding the public with ridiculous bullsh--," Trump said to thunderous applause, "-- partisan investigations, or whether they will apologize to the American people."

President Donald Trump, who was criticized last month for skipping a visit to a cemetery in France where US soldiers are buried, made an unscheduled visit Saturday to a military cemetery near Washington for a wreath-laying ceremony.

His visit to nearby Arlington National Cemetery took place on a gray and rainy day -- not unlike the conditions at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery east of Paris, which Trump was set to visit in early November before canceling.

President Donald Trump had a surreal, explosive clash with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) at the White House over border wall funding for their first meeting together since Democrats took control of the House of Representatives in the midterm elections.

As Trump talked about the need for border security, the conversation grew increasingly tense as Pelosi and Schumer pushed back against his demand for $5 billion to fund the border wall.

Those who appreciate the Donald Trump presidency for its transparent refusal to apply lipstick to piggish federal policy have a new example to point to. The Daily Beast is reporting that Trump "has repeatedly shrugged" off any concerns about the massive and rapidly expanding national debt, reportedly saying about the day of debt-reckoning, "yeah, but I won't be here."

This sentiment is no surprise for the dwindling number of people in public life who worry actively about the long-term fiscal unsustainability of the United States. Trump campaigned, successfully, on "protecting" Social Security and Medicare, expanding the already-swollen military budget, and cutting taxes. There was no way in hell that that combination would reduce budget deficits and debt, and hoo boy has it not.$

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump and Democrats are delivering competing closing arguments during the final weekend before Tuesday’s elections, but their messages are complicated by a deadly shooting in a politically pivotal state.

Trump aimed to drum up voter turnout with events Saturday in Belgrade, Montana, and Pensacola, Florida, about 200 miles west of Florida’s capital, Tallahassee, where two people were shot to death and five others wounded at a yoga studio on Friday night.

The Democrats' all-out attack on Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh, which culminated in a blisteringly partisan hearing last Thursday, may have backfired on the party just before the November elections.

The latest IBD/TIPP poll finds that President Donald Trump's approval ratings made a strong rebound this month, with a four-point gain to 40%, reversing almost the entire loss he suffered the month before. His disapproval rating went from 56% last month to 54% now.

As the Senate convened for a rare August work period, the late-summer session serves as a reminder of how much has changed in the partnership between Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and President Trump.

This time last year, the two men were barely on speaking terms. Mr. Trump bashed the GOP leader on Twitter after the collapse of Republican efforts to repeal President Barack Obama's health care law. McConnell said Mr. Trump had "excessive expectations" for what was possible. The phone lines between them went quiet for days.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump on Tuesday told House Republicans he is "1,000 percent" behind their rival immigration bills, providing no clear path as party leaders searched for a way defuse the escalating controversy over family separations at the southern border.

And it's uncertain if Trump's support will be enough to push any legislation through the divided GOP majority.

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump and his allies in Britain and France on Saturday (Apr 14) hailed their joint surgical strikes in Syria over the regime's alleged use of chemical weapons, and warned Damascus that another such attack would be met with renewed firepower.

The narrowly targeted pre-dawn operation, which took aim at three chemical weapons facilities, earned quick scorn from Russia, but Moscow's push for condemnation of the strikes at the UN Security Council fell far short.

A growing chorus of Republicans, including President Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), have called on Senate candidate Roy Moore to withdraw from a special election in Alabama if allegations prove true that the former judge initiated a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl nearly four decades ago.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who was accompanying Trump as he traveled from China to Vietnam on Friday, said, “Like most Americans, the president does not believe we can allow a mere allegation, in this case one from many years ago, to destroy a person’s life. However, the president also believes that if these allegations are true, Judge Moore will do the right thing and step aside.”

NEW YORK (AP) -- President Donald Trump is making his debut at the United Nations and taking his complaints about the world body straight to the source.

In his first appearance as president, Trump on Monday was addressing a U.S.-sponsored event on reforming the 193-member organization he has sharply criticized.

The White House pushed back against reports of a feud between President Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, saying the two leaders are on the same page with the president’s agenda.

“President Donald J. Trump and Senator Mitch McConnell remain united on many shared priorities, including middle-class tax relief, strengthening the military, constructing a southern border wall, and other important issues,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

“They will hold previously scheduled meetings following the August recess to discuss these critical items with members of the congressional leadership and the President’s Cabinet. White House and leadership staff are coordinating regarding the details of those meetings,” she said.

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump inflamed tension after a deadly rally by white nationalists in Virginia by insisting that counter protesters were also to blame, drawing condemnation from some Republican leaders and praise from white supremacists.

In a combative news conference, Trump backed off from his Monday statements explicitly denouncing the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis and white supremacists for the violence that erupted at a "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, and reverted to his weekend contention that "many sides" were to blame.

President Trump on Wednesday teamed up with two conservative Republican senators to roll out new legislation aimed at dramatically curbing legal immigration to the United States, a key Trump campaign promise.

Sens. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and David Perdue (R-Ga.) have been working with White House officials to revise and expand a bill released earlier this year that would halve the number of people who receive legal permanent residence over a decade.

President Donald Trump urged Congress to pass a budget that provides for higher, stable and predictable funding for the U.S. military.

“Call that congressman and call that senator, and make sure you get it,” Trump said Saturday at the commissioning of the Gerald R. Ford, the Navy’s newest aircraft carrier. “We must end the defense sequester once and for all.”
