San Mateo-based SolarCity Corp. and its parent, Tesla Inc., plan to lay off more than 200 employees at their Roseville offices, part of continuing restructuring in the aftermath of Tesla’s acquisition of SolarCity last fall.

Confirmation of the layoffs came in the form of two standard “WARN Act” letters received by the California Employment Development Department at the end of August. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act requires large businesses to give early warning of layoffs and closures.

Law Bans Direct Sales --So Much For Texas Free Markets

Despite Tesla’s best efforts, the Texas legislature this week opted not to pass a bill which would have allowed the electric automaker to sell cars directly to consumers. Instead, if Tesla wants to sell its highly revered vehciles in the lone star state, it looks like it’s going to have to do it through local franchise dealers, something the company has no intention of doing.

Unfortunately, this is a story we’ve seen play time and time again in many states over the past few years. Tesla, which prefers (read: demands) to sell its cars directly to consumers, is forced to lawyer up and fight against powerful and influential auto dealer lobbyists who want to protect their cash cows.

Highlighting the outdated nature of franchise laws, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, following New Jersey issuing a similar ban against Tesla direct sales, penned an insightful letteron the topic to the “people of New Jersey.” Thankfully, New Jersey this past March took heed, wised up, and reversed its sales ban.

Tesla's $35K Model 3 Targets BMW 3 Series

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has confirmed an Auto Express UK report that the company's next car after the Model X SUV (pictured above) will be called the Model 3 and retail for $35,000.

That puts it well under the luxury-focused Model S, which starts at $69,900 and usually sells in the $80,000 to $90,000 range, depending on options and trim level. If the Model 3 (pictured below in mock-ups created by Auto Express) is as good as the company's previous cars, automakers should be very concerned—especially established stalwarts like BMW and Mercedes.

The biggest issue with electric cars is range. But like other Tesla vehicles, the Model 3 could render it a non-issue in most circumstances. Musk claims the Model 3 will travel over 200 miles on a single charge. Tesla has already pulled this off twice before: first with the now-defunct Roadster, and again with the top three tiers of the Model S sedan (the company has since discontinued the base model, which got 160 miles of range).

So there's no question the company has the technology. There's also no question the company's cars perform; the now-defunct Tesla Roadster did 0-60 in just over four seconds, while the Model S does it in under six. And both are capable handlers.

Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, has unveiled an upgraded passenger version of the Dragon cargo ship NASA buys for resupply runs to the International Space Station.

Rather than parachuting down into the ocean, the new capsule is outfitted with powerful motors and landing legs to make precision touchdowns on land, said SpaceX founder and chief executive Elon Musk, a billionaire technology entrepreneur who also runs the Tesla Motors Inc electric car company.

"That is how a 21st century spaceship should land," Mr Musk said to an audience at SpaceX's California headquarters.

More than 32,500 people also watched the Dragon unveiling on a live SpaceX webcast.

"It is conceivable that we could do the first flight to orbit," said Mr Musk. "We would initially do it without people at the end of next year and then the first flight with people would be in 2016 and we think that would be very achievable."

Lifting the vehicle's hatch, Mr Musk settled into a reclined gold-and-black pilot's seat and pulled down a sleek, rounded glass control panel. The cabin, designed to fly a crew of seven, looked more like a Star Trek film set than the flight deck of NASA's now-retired space shuttle.

Dragon, which launches on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, is one of three privately owned space taxis vying for NASA development funds and launch contracts.
