Darren Wilson Resigned Over Threats, Lawyer Says

FERGUSON, Mo. - Former Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson's lawyer saysWilson resigned because he was concerned about the potential for violence against other officers if he didn't.

His lawyer, Neil Bruntrager, told The Associated Press that Wilson decided to step aside after police Chief Tom Jackson told him about the alleged threats on Saturday.

"The information we had was that there would be actions targeting the Ferguson (police) department or buildings in Ferguson related to the police department," Bruntrager said. He said Wilson, who had worked for the department for less than three years, and the city were already discussing an exit strategy, acknowledging that staying on as an officer there would be impossible.

Many have criticized the authorities' handling of the case, but the town's leaders have said no leadership changes were in the works. Asked if he would resign, Jackson said flatly, "No."

SAN MARINO, Calif. (AP) — The doo-doo has gotten too deep for the mayor of a wealthy Los Angeles suburb who flung dog poop onto a political opponent's property.

The Pasadena Star-News (http://bit.ly/1kLDwcZ ) reports San Marino Mayor Dennis Kneier (kuh-NEER') resigned Tuesday after outcry from residents who say he smeared their image.

Kneier remains on the City Council. Councilman Eugene Sun will serve as mayor.

Kneier found the bag of dog waste June 7 and tossed it onto the walkway of political opponent Philip Lao.

Lao recognized the mayor on surveillance video and called police. Video of the incident went viral.

In his resignation letter, Kneier says his actions were inconsiderate and disrespectful and he's stepping down because the event continues to be embarrassing to him and to the city.

Los Angeles NAACP President Leon Jenkins resigned Thursday amid controversy over the organization's connections to Clippers owner Donald Sterling.

The group was expected to honor Sterling with a lifetime achievement award, but withdrew its plans after audio recordings of Sterling making racist comments emerged. Jenkins announced Monday that Sterling's donations to the organization would be returned, adding, "There is a personal, economic and social price that Mr. Sterling must pay for his attempt to turn back the clock on race relations." Sterling was banned for life from the NBA on Tuesday and fined $2.5 million.

Records indicate that Sterling's foundations have given Jenkins' branch at least $45,000 since 2007, The New York Times reports. The Times also points out that Sterling was given a similar award under Jenkins' leadership in 2009.

"Please be advised that the legacy, history and reputation of the NAACP is more important to me than the presidency," Jenkins declared in his letter of resignation shared in a NAACP statement. He added that he was resigning "In order to separate the Los Angeles NAACP and the NAACP from the negative exposure I have caused the NAACP."

The NAACP added that the national office is developing branch guidelines for the award selection process.

With the rocky rollout of his health care law in a post-deadline lull, President Obama will move this week to shake up his health care team, accepting the resignation of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and tapping his budget director as a troubleshooting replacement, the White House confirmed Thursday.

Mrs. Sebelius, a former Kansas governor who has served as HHS secretary for Mr. Obama’s entire tenure, was the president’s point person as his signature law stumbled out of the blocks in October.

Despite calls for her to be fired, Mrs. Sebelius stayed on the job to oversee a recovery of HealthCare.gov that resulted in at least 7.5 million enrollments for health care plans.

Mrs. Sebelius, however, is seen as damaged by too many congressional Democrats who are warily eyeing November’s elections, in which Obamacare is expected to play a major role.

Some Republicans could barely contain their glee.
