Obesity and inactivity could someday account for more cancer deaths than smoking if current trends continue, a leading cancer expert says.

As the rate of smoking decreases, other unhealthy habits threaten to offset the progress in reducing cancer deaths, says Richard Wender, a physician and chief cancer control officer at the American Cancer Society (ACS). A study in the New England Journal of Medicine last fall found 13 types of cancer were linked to excess body weight.

L.A.'s Big Fat Failure

By Jake Novak, Mar. 19, 2015, CNBC.com

When government and nanny state types try to trample on liberty, they always use the excuse that their actions are necessary for "our own safety."

And that was the excuse behind the highly intrusive, condescending, and possibly unconstitutional zoning rule passed by the Los Angeles City Council in 2008 limiting the opening or expansion of fast food restaurants in mostly minority neighborhoods. The argument was that obesity and other maladies often connected to a diet high in fat and salt are more common among minorities because there are so many unhealthy restaurants where they live.

By Gareth Roberts, Oct. 14, 2014, Mirror.co.uk

A 20-stone politician put in charge of public health has come under fire for being too FAT for the job.

Among her duties as Belgium's new Minister of Public Health, Maggie De Block is tasked with tackling obsesity.

And that, say image-obsessed critics, is a joke.

But she was considered a surprise choice for the job as Health Minister in the new centre-right coalition which has just taken office.

And Maggie – who tips the scales at something over 20 stones – is not exactly setting a good example in a country where obesity is a problem, according to her detractors.

The anti-Maggie charge was led by Tom van de Weghe, a Washington-based correspondent for Belgium's VRT television station.

In a tweet he questioned whether she would be "credible" in her new post.

NOS, a top Dutch TV channel, likened her to a larger-than-life figure from a Rubens painting and said her "obvious corpulence" would cause "sniggering".
