 For the left, it is never enough to virtue-signal. They must also demonstrate that those who oppose them are evil.

 I woke up to a barrage of stupidity on my Facebook feed. Which, of course, given how many of my Facebook acquaintances are writers and others who think that if you're to the right of Lenin you're a Nazi, means this must be a day ending in y.

 Most of the time I just shrug and sigh and go on with my life.  But this stupidity is not normal stupidity. This is special stupidity, worthy of special mention.

Last week Georgia governor Brian Kemp signed perhaps the most impressive and comprehensively pro-life “heartbeat bill” in the nation. The law (set to go into effect in 2020) not only bans abortion when the baby has a “detectable human heartbeat” it declares the scientific, philosophical, and theological truth that an unborn child is a “natural person” under state law. The law — like other state heartbeat bills — defies controlling Supreme Court authority, and expect pro-abortion activists to immediately challenge it in court.

 It’s happening again. People who should know better are pointing to California’s current budget surplus as proof that the state, the world’s fifth largest economy, is in sound financial shape. That figure is also being used to support the claim that California’s relatively high tax burden and onerous regulations are not too problematic, as CNBC’s Robert Frank did on Squawk Box the morning after Tax Day. 

 The surplus figure cited by Frank and others has two problems: it’s both misleading and paints an incomplete picture of the Golden State’s finances. The truth is that there is no revenue surplus had by California state government. In fact, the state’s long-run obligations far exceed projected revenue collections to the tune of $1 trillion in unfunded pension liabilities alone. When factoring in the cost of non-pension benefits for state workers, such as health care for retired government employees, the debt facing California taxpayers rises further.

As Syria burns, as casualty rates soar to levels not seen in the Middle East since the Iran–Iraq War, and as a Ba’athist dictator clings to power in part by the use of chemical weapons, it simply boggles the mind that so many Americans seem to believe that the world would be better off with Saddam Hussein — and are so committed to this view that they literally want to shut down any discourse from supporters of the 2003 invasion. Here, for example, is Bill Clinton, dismissing Dick Cheney’s critiques, with this incredible statement: “I believe if they hadn’t gone to war in Iraq, none of this would be happening.”
