Aurora Theater Shooter Found Guilty

By John Ingold and Jordan Steffen, July 17, 2015 Denver Post

CENTENNIAL — James Holmes is guilty of murder for killing 12 people in an Aurora movie theater three years ago, a jury decided Thursday, ending the legal limbo for one of the worst mass shootings in American history.

In count after emphatic count, jurors rejected the defense's argument that what happened at the Century Aurora 16 theater on July 20, 2012, was a tragic act of insanity. It was a deliberate crime, jurors said.

Holmes now faces possible execution as punishment.

The jury of nine women and three men found Holmes guilty of 24 counts of first-degree murder — two for each victim slain — as well as 134 counts of first-degree attempted murder, six counts of attempted second-degree murder and one count of explosives possession.

Australia Hasn’t Had A Mass Shooting Since 1996

By John Donohue, June. 26, 2015, Stanford University

The story of Australia, which had 13 mass shootings in the 18-year period from 1979 to 1996 but none in the succeeding 19 years, is worth examining.

The turning point was the 1996 Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania, in which a gunman killed 35 individuals using semiautomatic weapons.

In the wake of the massacre, the conservative federal government succeeded in implementing tough new gun control laws throughout the country. A large array of weapons were banned – including the Glock semiautomatic handgun used in the Charleston shootings. The government also imposed a mandatory gun buy back that substantially reduced gun possession in Australia.

The effect was that both gun suicides and homicides (as well as total suicides and homicides) fell. In addition, the 1996 legislation made it a crime to use firearms in self-defense.

When I mention this to disbelieving NRA supporters they insist that crime must now be rampant in Australia. In fact, the Australian murder rate has fallen to close one per 100,000 while the US rate, thankfully lower than in the early 1990s, is still roughly at 4.5 per 100,000 – over four times as high. Moreover, robberies in Australia occur at only about half the rate of the US (58 in Australia versus 113.1 per 100,000 in the US in 2012).

How did Australia do it? Politically, it took a brave prime minister to face the rage of Australian gun interests.

Obama Rejects Mass Shootings As 'New Normal' In America

By Nerda Pickler, Jun. 19, 2015, Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — President Barack Obama said Friday he refuses to accept the idea that regular mass shooting are "the new normal" in America but doesn't expect Congress to respond because of the influence of the National Rifle Association.

Obama said his first comments on the church shootings in South Carolina, in which he said that political realities foreclosed action by Congress, had been misinterpreted by some as showing he was resigned to inaction on the issue of access to guns.

"I'm not resigned," he told the U.S. Conference of Mayors. "I have faith that we will eventually do the right thing."

The president said more thoughtful debate is needed from partisans on both sides on the issue — "without demonizing all gun owners who are overwhelmingly law-abiding, but also without suggesting that any debate about this involves a wild-eyed plot to take everybody's guns away."

In an interview earlier Friday with comedian Marc Maron for his podcast, Obama said the country has to find a way to respect hunting and sportsmanship traditions while preventing a 21-year-old who "is racist or is deranged from going into a gun store and suddenly is packing and can do enormous harm."
