If You Can't Instill Hope, You'll Fail Miserably As A Leader

Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking with Libby Gill, the former head of communications/PR for Sony , Universal, and Turner Broadcasting, award-winning author of four books and an executive coach and consultant.  As we shared about the various projects we’re working on, and the topic of hope emerged.

Libby revealed that, in her former work as a senior executive in the entertainment field, sadly, she saw hope crushed in the people around her more times than she could count. She grew fascinated with the concept of hope, and became a student of “hope theory,” seeking to understand exactly how we can foster hope in our own lives and in the lives of those we lead.

This struck a deep chord in me, as my 18-years in corporate America was anything but hope-inspiring. In virtually all of my jobs, I watched senior leaders demeaning their staff, managers behaving abominably, and employees so threatened that they seemed to live only for crushing the hope out of anyone who might be deemed a threat.
