Iran Violates Past Nuclear Promises On Eve Of Deal

By Adam Kredo, Jul. 2, 2015, Free Beacon

VIENNA—Senior Obama administration officials are defending Iranian nuclear violations in the aftermath of a bombshell report published Wednesday by the United Nations indicating that Iran has failed to live up to its nuclear-related obligations, according to sources apprised of the situation.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) disclosed yesterday that Iran has failed to meet its commitments under the interim Joint Plan of Action to convert recently enriched uranium gas to powder.

While Iran has reduced the amount of enriched uranium gas in its stockpiles, it has failed to dispose of these materials in a way that satisfies the requirements of the nuclear accord struck with the United States and other powers in 2013.

Secretary of State John Kerry declared last summer that Iran would be forced to comply with such restrictions, and State Department officials were assuring reporters as recently as last month that the Iranians would meet their obligations.

Wednesday’s disclosure by the IAEA sent the State Department rushing to downplay the Iranian violation.

Obama administration officials insisted that despite Iran’s failure to meet its obligations, negotiations were still on track and that Tehran would face no repercussions.

Iran Deal Could Kill Traditional Nuclear Policy

AP
By Emma-Jo Morris, Jul. 1, 2015, Free Beacon

Bowing to Iran’s pursuit of nuclear capability will make it harder to enforce America’s longstanding policy of non-proliferation among enemies and allies alike, according to several foreign policy experts speaking at the Heritage Foundation on Tuesday.

Experts warned that proliferation would grow more difficult to control in the coming years, saying that America is no longer in a position to police nuclear development around the world.

“The fundamental problem is that we’re giving ground on what has been a principle of U.S. non proliferation policy for 70 years, which is the spread of enrichment and reprocessing to any country, even our allies, as a problem. And what this Iran deal does is make an exception, not just for any country, but for Iran, a country that’s continually cheating on its agreements. So in the wake of the deal, I think it becomes very hard for us to go to our allies and say, ‘we trust Tehran with this technology, but we don’t trust you,’” said Matthew Kroenig, an associate professor at Georgetown University.

The American government is limited in its capacity to control nuclear development internationally, and new incentives for foreign states to rein in their nuclear development must be implemented, the experts said.

Islamic Militants Carried Out Attacks On 15 Egyptian Military Positions

By Abraham Rabinovich, Jul. 1, 2015, Free Beacon

JERUSALEM—In their most brazen attack yet, Islamic militants in northern Sinai carried out simultaneous attacks Wednesday against 15 Egyptian military positions, killing 64 soldiers and police officers, according to an Egyptian newspaper. Reuters quoted Egyptian military sources as saying that more than 100 attackers were killed, but there has been no confirmation of this figure.

The operation came two years after Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Morsi was ousted as Egypt’s president by the army. In another blow to the Egyptian government, a car bomb in Cairo on Tuesday killed Egypt’s state prosecutor, Hisham Barakat, who has presided over the mass arrest of Brotherhood leaders. These attacks were carried out during the holy month of Ramadan which Islamic militants in several countries are marking with attacks on perceived enemies.

The Sinai militants, mostly Bedouin, affiliated themselves with the Islamic State in the past year but they had been attacking government targets in Sinai a year before that when Morsi was overthrown. Some 500 Egyptian soldiers have been killed in Sinai in this period. Security forces have thus far been unable to make significant headway against the jihadists, who pull back into mountain lairs after their strikes. They have also carried out several rocket attacks against Israel.

Iran Threatens To Go Nuclear If Talks Fail

By Adam Kredo, Jul. 1, 2015, Free Beacon

VIENNA—Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hinted this week that Iran would decide to fully pursue its nuclear program in a way “harsher than what they [the United States can] imagine” if Western powers fail to uphold any nuclear agreement expected to be finalized in the coming days.

Rouhani’s comments come as negotiators in Vienna struggle to solve disagreements over a range of issues concerning the future of Tehran’s nuclear program. The ongoing disputes prevented the sides from finalizing the agreement before a self-imposed June 30 deadline.

Talks are now expected to continue through July 9.

“If they [the P5+1 negotiating countries] breach the [nuclear] agreement, we immediately go back to the old path, harsher than what they imagine,” Rouhani was quoted as saying this week in Persian language media reports that were independently translated for the Washington Free Beacon.

Walmart Selling Iranian, Cuban Flags

By Adam Kredo, Jun. 24, 2015, Free Beacon

Walmart continues to sell the Iranian and Cuban flags, as well as artwork depicting the Cuban dictator Fidel Castro urging people to “liberate” Cuba, according to the super store’s website.

Amid a growing controversy over the sale and display of the Confederate flag in such stores, Walmart continues to sell the official flags of Iran and Cuba.

The Iranian flag, which was created in the wake of the Islamic Revolution that brought extremists into office in 1979, is being sold online at Walmart.com for a price of $54.89.

The Iranian flag is “suitable for parades or indoor display,” according to the product description.

The Cuban flag also can be purchased for $13.75, according to the website.

“This seaworthy international courtesy flag can be used on ocean going commercial or private vessels,” according to the product description.
