Flight 93 Memorial: 3 Buildings Destroyed By Fire, Flag, Artifacts Endangered

A fire destroyed three administrative buildings at the Flight 93 National Memorial Friday afternoon, possibly taking with it 10 percent of the memorial's tributes and the American flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol on Sept. 11, 2001.

Seven fire departments were called to a working structure fire at the memorial headquarters complex along Park Headquarters Road in Stonycreek Township around 3:13 p.m.

“The flames were whipped by high winds,” Mike Litterst, National Park Service spokesman, said in a prepared statement. "All three of the buildings in the complex are a total loss."

No one was hurt in the blaze. Litterst said all of the staff and volunteers working in the buildings evacuated without injury or incident.

Litterst said the Congressional Gold Medal was not on site, but the flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol during the attacks was. Former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert presented the flag to the memorial at the anniversary service on Sept. 11. Park Service officials could not confirm whether the flag was destroyed. Litterst said other than that, they have no idea about what could have been lost.
