Around 460,000 Australians have been exposed or are panicking about their imminent outing as users of the American cheating website. The site's owners Avid Life Media are facing hundreds of millions of dollars in damages from clients who have lost their reputations, relationships and money.
Australian law suits could follow those filed already in Canada and the US, which include at least two class actions alleging breach of contract, negligence and breach of privacy. A local investigation by the Privacy Commissioner could add millions of dollars to the bill in possible fines.
Marque Lawyers partner Justin Cudmore said the case could spur calls for the reform of privacy laws including the establishment of a privacy tort.
