(CNN)When Kaleb Klakulak started second grade in Warren, Michigan, he was the new kid in town. His parents had just divorced, and Kaleb was shy and didn't easily make friends.

Then he met K.J. Gross.
"It was fun because he liked almost everything I liked," Kaleb said.
The two boys, both quiet and sweet-natured, started hanging out together all the time.
