NFL’s Ray McDonald Won’t Be Charged After Probe Of Fight

Karen Gullo, Nov. 10, 2014, Bloomberg

49ers defensive lineman Ray McDonald won’t face charges after a police investigation into an alleged act of domestic violence turned up insufficent evidence of a crime, a California prosecutor said.

McDonald was arrested in August on suspicion of domestic violence against his fiancee, Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in a statement today.

The fiancee struck McDonald during an argument at a birthday party at his home, and the two scuffled, with McDonald then forcibly attempting to remove the woman from the home, according to the statement. At 2:39 a.m. on Aug. 31 McDonald called police saying he needed to get “a female” out of his house and the fiancee called 911 two minutes later, resulting in McDonald’s arrest, Rosen said.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, issued a statement Sunday, denouncing the San Francisco 49ers’ decision to continue to play defensive end Ray McDonald during an investigation into felony domestic violence charges.

The statement, released to the press by Newsom’s communications director, Andrea Koskey reads:

“The City and County of San Francisco and the entire Bay Area has long stood staunchly on the forefront of domestic violence awareness and prevention. That’s why the 49ers’ continued insistence on playing Ray McDonald during his ongoing criminal investigation is a painful affront to every victim of domestic violence and sends a troubling message to our community and especially our children that ‘zero tolerance’ are empty words, not real actions.
