Historian Roger McGrath: White Slaves

By Chronicles Magazine, May 05, 2017

For many years I taught a U.S. history survey course.  One of my lecture topics was American slavery.  I made a real effort to put the peculiar institution into historical perspective.  I noted that slavery was not something reserved for blacks here in America but was as old as man himself and recognized no racial bounds.  There had been slavery in Asia, slavery in Africa, slavery in Europe, and slavery in the Americas.  Yellow man enslaved yellow man, black man enslaved black man, white man enslaved white man, and red man enslaved red man.  This shouldn’t have come as a surprise to college students, but, as the years went by, more and more incoming freshmen were surprised to learn that slavery was not uniquely American and not uniquely a black experience.

  1. My Father was a Slave during WW 2 under the Nazi Regime as a forced laborer. He was serving in the Polish Army and was a POW from 1939 until 1945. During that period he was moved around to various projects including building part of the Autobahn. I have records of this tragic event that he thankfully endured ! I Love You Dad.

  2. Thank YOU Larry Elder for continuing to bring "hidden" facts to your listeners. I didn't know that the American Indians owned slaves, or that the Irish were slaves and considered less than black slaves or any black people would even own slaves.
Everything that is world changing is taught in school. Everything that is relevant and pertinent is omitted from education! We must take the schools back!!
