Apple And Its Smartwatch Rivals Overtake The Mighty Swiss Watch Industry

Will.i.am has a smartwatch. Fossil has a smartwatch. But the Swiss? Not so much.

The famed watchmakers of that Alpine country fell behind smartwatches in sales for the first time in the fourth quarter as consumers reportedly migrated toward a sleeker, techier option, according to Strategy Analytics. Though Apple Inc. AAPL, -0.23% which introduced the Apple Watch in 2015,  and Samsung Electronics Co. 005930, +0.25%  are the dominant players in the field, everyone—except the Swiss—seems to be jumping into the category.

Strategy Analytics, a retail data firm, reported that in the fourth quarter of 2015, 8.1 million smartwatches shipped worldwide, while the Swiss shipped 7.9 million watch units. Apple and Samsung shipped eight out of 10 smartwatches worldwide in the first holiday season for Apple Watch sales.
