Iowa Emerges As A Free-For-All Among GOP’s Establishment Candidates

By Philip Rucker , Dec 31, 2015 Washington Post

MUSCATINE, Iowa — Chris Christie is the consummate New Hampshire candidate, all the way down to his silver lapel pin in the outline of the Granite State.

Yet this week the New Jersey governor was in a relative wilderness, caravaning along the slushy roads of eastern Iowa and sporting a different pin on his suit jacket: the Iowa state flag.

“I want your vote,” Christie told a hundred Iowans bundled up inside a coffee shop here Tuesday morning. “I’m not here just to get a Fox News show or a book deal or something else. I want to be president.”

While New Hampshire remains the hub of activity for Christie and other establishment-favored Republican candidates, including former Florida governor Jeb Bush and Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.), Iowa has suddenly emerged as a playground of opportunity, where an intense and stealthier battle among them is getting underway.

A Guide To The Allegations Of Bill Clinton’s Womanizing

By Glenn Kessler, Dec 30, 2015 Washington Post

On Twitter, Donald Trump, the GOP presidential front-runner, lashed out at Hillary Clinton, directly attacking her husband, the former president, for what Trump called “his terrible record of women abuse.”

Trump is obviously referring to the sexual allegations that have long swirled around Clinton, even before he became president. We’d earlier explored this question in 2014 when Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) wrongly claimed that a half dozen women had called Clinton a “sexual predator.” But for younger voters who may be wondering what the fuss is about, here again is a guide to the various claims made about Clinton’s sex life.

We will divide the stories into two parts: consensual liaisons admitted by the women in question and allegations of an unwanted sexual encounter.

Can Clinton Scandal Revival Hurt Hillary?

By Margaret Hartmann, Dec 30, 2015 NY Mag

This week Donald Trump pulled off yet another remarkable political feat: While several of his rivals have tried and failed to turn Bill Clinton's decades-old sex scandals into a 2016 campaign issue, Trump is actually making it happen. After his complaint about Hillary calling him "ISIS's best recruiter" morphed into a debate about sexism just before Christmas, Trump changed the conversation again, tweeting on Monday "If Hillary thinks she can unleash her husband, with his terrible record of women abuse, while playing the women's card on me, she's wrong!" Tuesday on the Today show, he added, "there certainly were a lot of abuse of women, you look at whether it's Monica Lewinsky or Paula Jones, or any of them, and that certainly will be fair game."

FBI Offers Reward In Case If Bacon Found At A Mosque

By Sally Ho, Dec 02, 2015 AP

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- The FBI is offering a $5,000 reward for information that helps them find the person who put raw bacon on the door handles of a Las Vegas mosque.

The FBI said in a statement Wednesday that agents are trying to find the man seen in a surveillance video putting the meat on the entrances of the Masjid-e-Tawheed mosque. Authorities call it a desecration of the Islamic worship center.

The Quran, the holy book of Islam, prohibits Muslims from eating pork, and pigs have been used to taunt or offend Muslims.

Merkel Warns Germans Against Refugee Hate In New Year's Speech

By Rainer Buergin, Dec 30, 2015 Bloomberg

Chancellor Angela Merkel signaled she’ll use Germany’s economic power to turn a record influx of refugees to the nation’s advantage and urged citizens to reject social conflict fomented by nationalists with “hate in their hearts.”
In a New Year’s address devoted to the impact of the refugee crisis, Merkel said coping with migration will cost Germany “time, effort and money,” according to prepared remarks provided by her office on Thursday. If handled right, the challenges of today will be the opportunities of tomorrow, she said.
Merkel pressed home the point that she’s determined to treat the influx as a chance to modernize and rejuvenate Europe’s biggest economy, a stance that’s won her international accolades while eroding her poll ratings at home. The domestic fallout pushed other crises such as the unresolved conflict in eastern Ukraine and the threat of the U.K. leaving the European Union into the background in her outlook for 2016.

The World In 2015: Terror, Migration Trump

By Telegraph Foreign Staff, Dec 21, 2015 Telegraph

Will we remember 2015 most for its grisly succession of terrorist attacks, or for the ceaseless flow of refugees out of the Middle East and north Africa?

The two phenomena - linked at source in the mutating form of Isil - were constant themes throughout the year. Some of the year's stories had more comprehensible beginnings and endings. Cecil the lion was killed; Aung San Suu Kyi was, in a political sense, resurrected. And some end 2015 as cliffhangers. Following a year that confirmed the rise of the insurgent, populist politician, can Donald Trump really become the Republican party's candidate for US president

Jobless Claims Rise Sharply During Holiday Week

By Reuters, Dec 31, 2015 Yahoo

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose sharply last week, a potential signal the job market was losing steam although some of the increase might be attributed to temporary holiday factors.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 20,000to a seasonally adjusted 287,000 for the week ended Dec.26, the U.S. Labor Department said on Thursday.

That was the highest since July, although in recent months the weekly readings for claims have held near a 42-year low.

"All You Americans Are Fired" - BuzzFeed News

By Jessica Garrison, Dec 01, 2015 Buzz Feed

MOULTRIE, Georgia — “All you black American people, fuck you all…just go to the office and pick up your check,” the supervisor at Hamilton Growers told workers during a mass layoff in June 2009.
The following season, according to a lawsuit filed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, about 80 workers, many of them black, were simply told: “All you Americans are fired.”
Year after year, Hamilton Growers, which has supplied squash, cucumbers, and other produce to Wal-Mart and the Green Giant brand, hired scores of Americans, only to cast off many of them within weeks, according to the U.S. government. And time after time, the grower filled the jobs with foreign guest workers instead.

Bill Cosby’s Walk Of Fame Star Won’t Be Removed

By Mannie Holmes, Dec 30, 2015 Variety

The comedian was charged and booked Wednesday with sexually assaulting a woman in 2004. This marked the start of criminal proceedings after dozens of women have come forward in the last year to accuse the 78-year-old entertainer of drugging and raping them.

“The answer is no,” said Leron Gubler, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce president and CEO. “Once a star has been added to the Walk, it is considered a part of the historic fabric of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Because of this, we have never removed a star from the Walk.”

Even Europe’s Humanitarian Superpower Is Turning Its Back On Refugees

By Griff Witte, Dec 30, 2015 Washington Post

MALMO, Sweden — When the small, crumpled body of 3-year-old Alan Kurdi washed up on the Aegean coast Sept. 2, Europe’s humanitarian superpower sprang into action.

Sweden’s prime minister headlined gala fundraisers, Swedish celebrities starred in telethons, and a country that prides itself on doing the right thing seemed to rally as one to embrace refugees fleeing for their lives.

But after taking in more asylum seekers per capita than any other nation in Europe, Sweden’s welcome mat now lies in tatters. Overwhelmed by the human tide of 2015, the center-left government is deploying extraordinary new border controls and slashing benefits in an unmistakable signal to refugees contemplating the long trek to Sweden in the new year: Stay out.

Ryan Payne, an electrician from Montana, joined that same standoff and boasted of organizing civilians into sniper squads that drew a bead on federal agents.

And not long ago, Jon Ritzheimer worried the FBI with his threatening rants against Muslims in Arizona and elsewhere, according to press reports.

Facebook Must Face Shareholder Class Actions Over IPO

By Jonathan Stempel, Dec 30, 2015 Yahoo

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A federal judge has certified two shareholder class actions accusing Facebook Inc of hiding concerns about its growth forecasts prior to the social media company's May 2012 initial public offering.

U.S. District Judge Robert Sweet in Manhattan said retail and institutional investors who claimed to lose money from buying Facebook shares at inflated prices in connection with the $16 billion IPO may pursue their respective claims as groups.

The decision is dated Dec. 11 but had been kept under seal, which Sweet lifted in an order made public on Tuesday.

Agents Nab Pakistanis With Terrorist Connections Crossing U.S. Border

By Stephen Dinan, Dec 30, 2015 Washington Times

When the U.S. Border Patrol nabbed two Pakistani men with ties to terrorism at the U.S.-Mexico border in September, it marked just the latest instance of illegal immigrants from so-called “special interest countries” using the southern border as a point of entry into the country.

Muhammad Azeem and Mukhtar Ahmad, both in their 20s and from Gujrat, were caught Sept. 20 by agents south of San Diego and just over the international border from Tijuana. When agents checked their identities through databases, they got hits on both of them: Mr. Ahmad popped up as an associate of a known or suspected terrorist, while Mr. Azeem’s information had been shared by a foreign government for intelligence purposes.

Suspect In Strip Crash That Killed 1, Injured Dozens Tests Positive For Marijuana

By Wesley Juh, Dec 30, 2015 Review Journal

The woman police said intentionally drove onto a crowded Strip sidewalk, killing a woman and injuring dozens of people, tested positive for marijuana, the Clark County district attorney's office said Wednesday.

A toxicology examination of Lakeisha Holloway, 24, earlier this month shows she was above the legal limit for marijuana.

Holloway told Las Vegas police that she remembered a body bouncing off her windshield, breaking it. She told police she was not on drugs or alcohol, according to an arrest report. Blood samples were taken from Holloway, and police initially said that though she did not demonstrate signs of being under the influence of alcohol when she was arrested, she may have been on stimulants. The district attorney's office did not mention indications of any other drugs in her system.

George Lucas Says He Sold ‘Star Wars’ To 'White Slavers’

By Jacob Bryant, Dec 30, 2015 Variety

While Disney has to be pleased with the way its $4 billion acquisition of Lucasfilm is turning out, thanks to the galactic success of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” the man who created the “Star Wars” universe doesn’t feel the same way.

In an interview with Charlie Rose, George Lucas spoke about everything from his and Disney’s branching vision to the deal itself. Lucas, who has always been protective of his series and even refers to them as his “kids,” hasn’t been looking back well on the deal with Disney (via Collider).

Up To 34 MILLION Blank 'Green Cards' And Work Permits To Be Ordered Ahead Of Obama Illegal Immigrant 'Amnesty'

By David Martosko, Dec 30, 2015 Daily Mail

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services plans to seek a vendor to produce as many as 34 million blank work permits and 'green cards' – the paperwork that authorizes immigrants to live and work in the United States – as the White House prepares to issue an executive order after the Nov. 4 midterm elections.

According to a draft solicitation published online, the government agency will look for a company that can produce a minimum 4 million cards per year for five years, and 9 million in the early stages.

President Barack Obama has pledged that he will make a move on immigration reform this year. His original timetable called for a decision by the end of the summer.

Saudi Arabia Budget Deficit 2015 And Oil Prices

By Lianna Brinded, Dec 29, 2015 BusinessInsider

Oil prices have plunged about 60% since the summer of 2014, and it is not only hurting energy companies' balance sheets — it's also slowly killing off oil-rich countries' economies, the latest being that of Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia is arguably to blame for hurting its own economy because it is a "swing producer," meaning it produces so much oil that it can shift prices depending on how much of the product it releases to the market.

Trump In 2008: Hillary Clinton Would Make A "Great" President

By Rebecca Shabad, Dec 29, 2015 CBS News

Donald Trump wrote in a blog post during the 2008 presidential campaign that Hillary Clinton would make a "great" president or vice president.

Buzzfeed unearthed an archived webpage of the blog post posted on www.trumpuniversity.com from March 2008 when he said the Democratic presidential nomination was still far from decided.

"Hillary Clinton said she'd consider naming Barack Obama as her vice-president when she gets the nomination, but she's nowhere near a shoo-in. For his part, Obama said he's just focused on winning the nomination, although at least one member of his team said Clinton would make a good vice-president. (I know Hillary and I think she'd make a great president or vice-president.)," Trump wrote.

American Crime Story Early Buzz: "So Compelling"

By Peter Sciretta, Dec 29, 2015 Slash Film

I didn’t get to sleep last night because I got sucked into binge watching Netflix’s Making of a Murderer documentary miniseries. I guess thats the new “my dog ate my homework”? If you’re not watching that series, you should check it out ASAP (and learn a lesson from me and begin watching earlier in the day, because you won’t be able to stop). While I don’t expect American Crime Story to be as gripping of an experience as Making of a Murderer, but during that show’s court sequences I began to get excited about Ryan Murphy‘s new FX series.

American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson is set to premiere on FX in February, and the first reactions have begun to appear online. Fox has sent out screeners for journalists to binge over the holiday break, and the early buzz is pretty high. The limited series re-examines the infamous O.J. Simpson trial told from the perspective of the lawyers, exploring “the chaotic behind-the-scenes dealings and maneuvering on both sides of the court, and how a combination of prosecution overconfidence, defense shrewdness, and the LAPD’s history with the city’s African-American community gave a jury what it needed: reasonable doubt.” The show stars Cuba Gooding Jr. as O.J. Simpson and John Travolta as defense attorney Robert Shapiro. Hit the jump to see the first tweets in our American Crime Story early buzz roundup.

Michael Moore On Donald Trump Republican Candidate

By Jason Guerrasio, Dec 29, 2015 Business Insider

Michael Moore has never been one to hold back his opinions, so when the Oscar-winning filmmaker airs his thoughts about Donald Trump, it tends to make news.

In a recent conversation with Business Insider to talk about his new movie “Where to Invade Next,” he made a bold prediction when discussing the polarizing presidential hopeful.

“Donald Trump is absolutely going to be the Republican candidate for president of the United States,” Moore told BI. “It’s going from being a joke to being a serious reality.”

Moore elaborated by saying that "people are feeling more and more that we've moved back into a darker time."
