ALBANY — Immigrants are playing an increasingly vital role in the city’s economy, accounting for nearly a third of all economic activity, a new report revealed.
The report released Thursday from state Controller Thomas DiNapoli found that immigrants generated $257 billion in economic activity, nearly double the figure from 2000.
“It demonstrates that immigrants are a crucial piece of New York City’s revival, both in terms of population and economic activity,” said Steven Choi of the New York Immigration Coalition.
“It is a huge marker about the value of immigrants,” Choi added.
Immigrants, according to the report, account for 37% of the city’s population, the largest share in 100 years. The city’s immigrant population — 3.1 million — has more than doubled since 1970 and is now the largest of any city in the United States.
