It started in 1998, with a $50 check out of the blue.

The money was a donation from one of the highest-placed men in Florida politics — Jeb Bush, the son of a former president who was about to be elected governor — to one of the lowest. Marco Rubio, 26, was running for the city commission in tiny West Miami.

“I remember him showing it off,” a Rubio friend recalled. “ ‘I got a check from Jeb Bush!’ ”

Disputes between Germany’s two ruling conservative parties over the migrant crisis is jeopardising the government's ability to act and pushing people towards far-Right parties, the country’s vice chancellor has warned.

Sigmar Gabriel, leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the junior partner in the coalition government, has criticised the growing conservative bloc infighting over the migrant influx as "irresponsible" following frequent clashes between Angela Merkel and Horst Seehofer, the leader of the Bavarian sister party.

The German chancellor, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has angered Mr Seehofer, who heads the Christian Social Union (CSU), with her open-door policy and her repeated claims that Germany can cope with the estimated 800,000 to one million asylum applications it expects by the end of this year.

SUMTE, Germany — This bucolic, one-street settlement of handsome redbrick farmhouses may for the moment have many more cows than people, but next week it will become one of the fastest growing places in Europe. Not that anyone in Sumte is very excited about it.

In early October, the district government informed Sumte’s mayor, Christian Fabel, by email that his village of 102 people just over the border in what was once Communist East Germany would take in 1,000 asylum seekers.

His wife, the mayor said, assured him it must be a hoax. “It certainly can’t be true” that such a small, isolated place would be asked to accommodate nearly 10 times as many migrants as it had residents, she told him. “She thought it was a joke,” he said.

Where oh where have the Muslim migrants gone?

That is the question German authorities are asking themselves after some troubling reports of disappearances.

According to German press reports, keeping track of all the Muhammads and Alis pouring across borders is proving ever so tricky for European countries being flooded with people on the move from the Middle East and Africa.

Now, the United Nations is partnering with a private company to offer a solution – a new “universal” identification system that will comply with the United Nations’ sustainability goal of getting “legal” biometric IDs that include iris scans, photographs and fingerprints, “into the hands of everyone in the world by the year 2030.”

The Russian jet which crashed in Sinai killing all 224 people on board did not lodge an SOS call before it hit the ground, it has emerged.

Egypt's civil aviation minister Hossam Kamal said there was also not believed to be any faults with the aircraft prior to the crash taking place.

It came as harrowing images of the mangled wreckage were released by the office of Egyptian Prime Minister Sharif Ismail, who visited the crash site in the Sinai Peninsula.

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump on Saturday announced a plan to reform the veterans health system at a rally in Norfolk, Va.

“We’re going to take care of those wounded warriors and we’re going to take care of our vets better than anybody."he said, speaking in front the USS Wisconsin — the same spot where now-Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) was formally introduced as Mitt Romney’s running mate in 2012.

Trump promised that in his administration, veterans would receive better healthcare more quickly.

Hillary Clinton continues to dominate the now smaller Democratic field of candidates in the first NBC News online poll conducted by SurveyMonkey taken after Joe Biden officially declared himself out of the presidential race. With Jim Webb and Lincoln Chafee also suspending their campaigns, the poll shows that while Clinton has reinforced her lead to 20 points, Bernie Sanders remains a force to consider, with strong support from younger voters and those dissatisfied or angry with the government.

Washington (CNN)The United States is set to deploy troops on the ground in Syria for the first time to advise and assist rebel forces combating ISIS, the White House said Friday.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said that the U.S. would be deploying "less than 50" Special Operations forces, who will be sent to Kurdish-controlled territory in northern Syria. The American troops will help local Kurdish and Arab forces fighting ISIS with logistics and are planning to bolster their efforts.

The deployment of U.S. Special Operations forces is the most significant escalation of the American military campaign against ISIS to date.

The Special Ops troops will first be deployed to northern Syria to help coordinate local ground forces and U.S.-led coalition efforts to fight ISIS, the senior administration official said. The local forces in that area have been the most effective U.S. partners in confronting ISIS.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) and 18 other members of the committee this week introduced articles of impeachment against IRS Commissioner John Koskinen.

As Chairman Chaffetz noted, the IRS under Commissioner Koskinen has failed to serve taxpayers and misled Congress and the American people:

“Commissioner Koskinen violated the public trust. He failed to comply with a congressionally issued subpoena, documents were destroyed on his watch, and the public was consistently misled.”

The release of Shaker Aamer comes after a publicity campaign and at the request of Prime Minister David Cameron, who had urged President Barack Obama to resolve the case of the last prisoner at Guantanamo with significant ties to Britain.

“He needs, first, to be in a hospital, and then to be with his family,” said Clive Stafford Smith, one of his lawyers.

His release, the 15th from Guantanamo this year, brings the detainee population there to 112, and comes as part of a renewed push by Obama to close the facility opened by his predecessor after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center in New York.

Aamer, 48, had told his lawyers that he would seek a medical examination in Britain because of concerns about his health stemming in part from repeated hunger strikes while at Guantanamo.

He has received more media attention over the years than any other prisoners except the five who face trial by military commission for their alleged roles planning and providing support to 9/11 attacks.

President Barack Obama found himself drawn into Hillary Clinton's email controversy Friday as the White House acknowledged the State Department is withholding a set of messages Obama and Clinton exchanged during her four years as secretary of state.

As the State Department made public a new batch of more than 7,200 pages of Clinton's emails, officials stressed that the White House was not asserting executive privilege over the Obama-Clinton exchanges but insisting that they be treated as presidential records, which are normally not available to the public until between five and 12 years after a president leaves office.

The $12,000-a-month chief operating officer of Jeb Bush's 2016 presidential campaign has departed.

Christine Ciccone is the highest-ranking official to leave the Bush campaign since deep payroll cuts were announced. After an auspicious beginning, fundraising has slowed, polling has stalled and the former Florida governor received largely negative marks for his performance in Wednesday night's debate.

"I've got no comment. I've just got to go," the Wall Street Journal quoted Ciccone as saying, while the Bush campaign expressed gratitude for her service.

Donald Trump and Ben Carson — the two Republican frontrunners — support the Republican National Committee’s move to “suspend” its relationship with NBC News for a GOP presidential debate in February because of frustration with how CNBC handled this week’s debate.

Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks provided a statement to The Daily Caller: “The campaign supports the RNC’s decision to suspend the debate on February 26th due to the total lack of substance and respect exhibited during Wednesday night’s debate. We look forward to pursuing alternatives along with the RNC to ensure candidates are given ample opportunity to outline their vision for the future of our country.”

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Thursday refused to immediately halt the government's bulk collection of millions of Americans' phone records during a "transition" period to a new federal scheme that bans the controversial anti-terrorism surveillance.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York said it would not disturb Congress' decision to provide a 180-day period for an "orderly transition" to a new, targeted surveillance system from the sweeping National Security Agency program that the court found illegal on May 7.

"An abrupt end to the program would be contrary to the public interest in effective surveillance of terrorist threats, and Congress thus provided a 180-day transition period," Circuit Judge Gerard Lynch wrote for a three-judge panel. "Under the circumstances, we will defer to that reasonable decision."

The secrecy that has traditionally surrounded Congress’s in-house think-tank is under fire from advocates of open government, who argue that the research conducted on major issues of public policy – from environmental protection to immigration – should at long last be made public.

For 101 years, the Congressional Research Service has conducted studies for members of the Senate and House, and the findings have remained confidential unless the lawmakers release the research themselves.

People were exhausted, but also rattled and worried.

"We were shell-shocked," one source said.
The poor reviews were piling up — declaring CNBC the biggest loser of the night — and the moderators Carl Quintanilla and Becky Quick knew more would be published by the time the flight landed in New York.

So for some flyers, it was a sleepless night. But there was some laughter and some liquor to lighten the mood — and some speculation about how high the ratings would be.

At 12:30 p.m. Thursday they found out: 14 million people watched, easily making the much-derided debate the most-watched program in CNBC's 30-year history. Because advertisers paid $250,000 apiece, it was "also the most profitable night in the network's history," an NBCUniversal executive crowed.

CHICAGO (CBS) — On the same say that the City Council approved Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s $7.8 billion 2016 budget, he says he wants to keep his job when his current term is over.

The mayor sat down with CBS 2’s Chief Correspondent Jay Levine.

“You know its gonna stand the test of time of having been right for stabilizing what was bleeding, and that’s what you would want out of public service: a selfless act,” Emanuel said.

The mayor sat down with Levine just hours after passing a painful budget. He admitted that he is now reconsidering an earlier pledge not to seek a third term.

“I’m going to prepare and run for a third term and I’m not going to be caught flat-footed,” Emanuel said. “I’ve said I really love this job and I love this city and can really make a big difference…I thought about it when I went swimming and I’ve come to this conclusion.”

Sayyari said the Iranian vessels had been in the Caspian Sea and at the Russian port of Astrakhan. “The presence of Iranian warships in international ports shows the Iranian Navy’s prowess,” Fars quoted him saying.

Trump, who leads many national 2016 polls, granted Breitbart News an interview on the subject. Full questions and responses below:

BNN: The media has been filled with stories about companies flying in low-wage H-1B workers to replace American workers in tech jobs. Adding insult to injury, these American workers have been forced to train their replacements. If you were President, would you put a stop to this practice?

DT: Day one. This is why I got into this race. Because the everyday working person in this country is getting screwed. Lobbyists write the rules to benefit the rich and powerful. They buy off Senators like Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)79% to help them get rich at the expense of working Americans by using H-1B visas–so called “high tech” visas–to replace American workers in all sorts of solid middle class jobs. If I am President, I will not issue any H-1B visas to companies that replace American workers and my Department of Justice will pursue action against them.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s plan to deport millions of undocumented immigrants is nuts, says FWD.us, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s political advocacy group.

The Facebook founder got name-checked in the CNBC Republican candidates debate Wednesday, as Trump grudgingly admitted calling Florida Sen. Marco Rubio “Mark Zuckerberg’s personal senator” for promoting expanded use of the H-1B employment visas used by Silicon Valley companies.

Trump has argued H-1B visas displace Americans who otherwise might land high-paying tech jobs. He’s advocating restrictions in the program as part of an overhaul on immigration that includes deporting immigrants who lack legal status in the U.S. and walling off the border with Mexico.

Over the last two presidential debates, both Democratic and Republican candidates have asserted that the television news media is biased and has done a poor job informing voters of the most pressing issues in the election.

And while their focus is on things like the type of questions asked by debate moderators, they are overlooking much clearer signs of potential conflicts of interest. Fundraising disclosures released this month and in July reveal that lobbyists for media companies are raising big money for establishment presidential candidates, particularly Hillary Clinton.

The giant media companies that shape much of the coverage of the presidential campaign have a vested stake in the outcome. From campaign finance laws that govern how money is spent on advertising to the regulators who oversee consolidation rules, the media industry has a distinct policy agenda, and with it, a political team to influence the result.

The top fundraisers for Clinton include lobbyists who serve the parent companies of CNN and MSNBC.
