FLASHBACK: Amway Makes No Apology For President DeVos' 'Private Gift' To Anti-Gay Marriage Group --Owns Orlando Magic

ADA, MI - Amway has responded to a call for a global boycott of the direct sale giant by saying that company president Doug DeVos has a right to do what he wants to with his personal money.

In fact, the company points out the owners "believe the highest calling of any individual is to express their own personal beliefs."

"As private citizens, the DeVos family supports causes and organizations that advocate for policies aligned to their personal beliefs," said an Amway spokeswoman in a statement.

She noted the $500,000 donation that's come under fire was a private gift from the Amway president’s personal foundation – the Douglas and Maria DeVos Foundation - to the National Organization for Marriage in 2009.

Amway's co-founders -- Doug's father, Rich DeVos, and the late Jay Van Andel -- and their families, are staunch Republicans who long have been generous supporters of conservative candidates and groups.

"Both families believe one of the highest callings of any individual is to express their own personal beliefs as a participant in the democratic process," she said.

LGBT rights activist Fred Karger called on gay rights supporters to boycott not only Amway but all the businesses owned by the extended DeVos family, including the Orlando Magic basketball team because of DeVos’ donation to the NOM, a group that has campaigned to ban gay marriage in California and other states.

The call for a boycott comes as Atlanta-based fast-food chain Chick-Fil-A is feeling the ire of the gay community over CEO Dan Cathy’s comments and financial support of anti-gay marriage groups.
